According to Rand’s recent post ‘One Dead Simple Tactic for Better Rankings in Google Local‘ he basically says that the way to list well in your targeted location is by having more quality backlinks from business directories as well as other review sites that allow you to post information (and hopefully a link) back to your business.
Recently we bought a localized domain (you can figure out what I mean) and forwarded it directly to our main site. After submitting it to Google Local Business Center and getting it approved, our listing was nowhere near ranking for blatant local searches and actually 11 pages deep in the local listings.
Following Rand’s instructions almost verbatim, I set out to find some of my local competitors sources for business links and listings. After coming up with a solid list of places to submit my companies information, I dove in.
Now we wait…
Update: Within 3 days we were listing on the 2nd page for the same batch of local searches. I noticed that many of the results listing on the first page all had reviews so I emailed one of our satisfied customers and asked them to post a review. They obliged and within 24 hours of them posting their review, our site was listing #2 for 75% of the same local queries.
Now we rinse and repeat. Watch out for us killing the local search game in a city near you.
